THE PRACTICE OF PRAYER

📅 June 21, 2026 | ⏱ 5 min read

Prayer isn’t meant to be passive – it’s a practice that strengthens our faith and draws us closer to God. Through Scripture and Jesus’ example, we learn why we pray, how to pray, and what happens when we do. As we develop a consistent rhythm of prayer, God meets us with peace, strengthens our faith, and works in the circumstances of our everyday lives.

THIS WEEK'S DEVOTIONALS

MONDAY

Day 1: Prayer as a Divine Conversation

Reading: Matthew 6:5-13

Devotional: Prayer is not a performance to impress others or a formula to manipulate God. It’s an intimate conversation with your loving Father. Jesus taught us to approach God with authenticity, not empty words or religious showmanship. When you pray today, remember you’re speaking to someone who already knows your needs yet delights in hearing your voice. He doesn’t evaluate your eloquence but treasures your honesty. Like a parent who cherishes even the simplest words from their child, God values your heartfelt communication over polished phrases. Prayer transforms when we stop trying to impress and simply connect.

Reflection Question: Are you praying to perform or to connect with God?

TUESDAY

Day 2: Aligning Your Will with God’s

Reading: Luke 22:39-46

Devotional: In Gethsemane, Jesus modeled the most difficult aspect of prayer: surrendering our will to God’s. He honestly expressed His desire to avoid suffering, yet concluded with “not my will, but yours be done.” This tension is real for us too. We can bring our genuine requests – even our desperate pleas – to God, but mature prayer always concludes by trusting His wisdom over our preferences. This doesn’t mean God ignores our desires; it means we trust His perspective is infinitely greater than ours. When you pray today, practice this sacred surrender. Tell God what you want, then release it into His capable hands.

Reflection Question: What request do you need to surrender to God’s will today?

WEDNESDAY

Day 3: The Power of Persistent Prayer

Reading: James 5:13-18

Devotional: Elijah was human, just like you. Yet his prayers stopped rain for three-and-a-half years and brought it again. This isn’t about Elijah’s superhuman abilities but about God’s supernatural response to earnest prayer. The word “earnest” suggests intensity, persistence, and faith-filled expectation. Your prayers matter more than you realize. They don’t change God’s mind; they align your heart with His purposes and release His power into situations. Don’t underestimate what God might do through your consistent, faith-filled prayers. The same God who answered Elijah hears you today. Your faithful prayers for family, church, and circumstances create space for divine intervention.

Reflection Question: What situation needs your persistent, earnest prayer?

THURSDAY

Day 4: Finding Peace Through Grateful Prayer

Reading: Philippians 4:6-7

Devotional: Anxiety and gratitude cannot coexist in your mind. When worry threatens to overwhelm you, prayer with thanksgiving becomes your weapon. This isn’t denying real struggles or dismissing legitimate concerns; it’s choosing to feed gratitude rather than anxiety. As you present your requests to God, intentionally thank Him for past faithfulness, current blessings, and future promises. This practice doesn’t just change your circumstances – it transforms your perspective. The peace that follows “transcends understanding” because it defies logic. Even when situations remain unchanged, your heart finds rest. Today, for every anxious thought, speak three things you’re grateful for.

Reflection Question: What are three blessings you can thank God for right now?

FRIDAY

Day 5: Praying Without Ceasing

Reading: 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

Devotional: “Pray without ceasing” doesn’t mean constant verbalization but continual connection. It’s developing an awareness of God’s presence throughout your day – brief conversations, spontaneous gratitude, quick requests for wisdom. Set reminders to pause and pray. When you wake, thank Him for a new day. Before meals, acknowledge His provision. When anxiety strikes, immediately turn to Him. As you close your eyes at night, review His faithfulness. Prayer becomes less about duration and more about consistency. You’re not building a spiritual resume; you’re deepening a relationship. The only way to learn prayer is to pray. Start small, stay consistent, and watch your connection with God deepen.

Reflection Question: What daily rhythm will help you pray more consistently?

Weekly Challenge: For the next seven days, set three daily alarms (morning, midday, evening) as prayer reminders. When they sound, stop and pray – even just briefly. Notice how this rhythm changes your awareness of God’s presence throughout your day.

THIS WEEK'S BIG IDEA

Prayer is essential because God invites us to talk with Him, trust Him, and align our hearts with His will.

SUNDAY'S MESSAGE

This week’s message focused on the practice of prayer as a vital spiritual discipline. We were reminded that the Bible tells us to pray, Jesus expects us to pray, and Jesus Himself modeled a life of prayer. Prayer is not about performance or perfect words – it is simply coming to our loving Father with worship, trust, honesty, gratitude, and surrender.

DIGGING DEEPER

The Transformative Power of Prayer: Building Spiritual Muscle

There’s a fundamental truth about spiritual growth that often gets overlooked: you can’t build spiritual strength by watching others work out. Just as Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson didn’t become a physical powerhouse by observing others lift weights, we don’t become spiritually strong simply by attending church and listening to others share their faith experiences. We need to put in our own spiritual reps, and one of the most essential exercises in our spiritual fitness routine is prayer.

The Challenge and the Necessity

Let’s be honest – prayer can be challenging. Finding time (or more accurately, making time) for prayer requires discipline. Sometimes we struggle to find the right words, or we feel like our prayers fall flat. Yet despite these challenges, prayer remains absolutely essential to the Christian faith. It’s not optional equipment in our spiritual gym; it’s foundational to everything we do as followers of Christ.

Why Prayer Matters

The Biblical Command

Scripture couldn’t be clearer about the importance of prayer. 1 Thessalonians 5:17 gives us a simple directive: “Never stop praying.” Some translations phrase this as “pray without ceasing,” painting a picture of prayer as a continuous conversation with God rather than an occasional religious duty. Paul reinforces this in Romans 12:12, urging believers to be “faithful in prayer.”

That word “faithful” deserves our attention. Are we faithful to God in prayer? Are we faithful in praying for our families, our church, our community? Faithfulness implies consistency, dedication, and commitment – not just occasional spiritual check-ins.

Jesus’ Expectation

In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus uses three powerful words: “when you pray” (Matthew 6:6). Notice He didn’t say “if you pray.” This subtle linguistic choice communicates expectation. Just as a parent tells a child “when you clean your room today” (not “if”), Jesus establishes prayer as a non-negotiable part of following Him.

Following Jesus’ Example

Mark 1:35 gives us a glimpse into Jesus’ own prayer life: “Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house, and went off to a solitary place where he prayed.” If the Son of God prioritized prayer, how much more should we?

The Theological Question

Some people wrestle with a deeper question: if God is all-knowing and already knows what we need, why pray at all? It’s a fair question, but consider this – we do countless things every day without fully understanding the mechanics behind them. Most of us send text messages without understanding cellular communication protocols. We cook food without grasping the thermodynamics involved. We understand the function without knowing all the mechanics.

Prayer works similarly. We may not fully comprehend how an all-knowing God who exists outside time interacts with our free-will prayers, but we know the function: the Bible says our prayers matter, and when we pray, things change. That should be enough.

How to Pray: Jesus’ Master Class

Interestingly, prayer is the only thing recorded in Scripture that the disciples explicitly asked Jesus to teach them. They watched Him perform miracles, heal the sick, and feed thousands, yet they said, “Lord, teach us to pray” (Luke 11:1).

In Matthew 6:5-13, Jesus provides a comprehensive guide to prayer. Let’s break down His teaching:

Prayer Is Not a Performance

Jesus warns against praying to impress others. Prayer isn’t about using eloquent words or sounding spiritual. It’s honest communication with a loving Father who cares more about our hearts than our vocabulary.

Pray From the Heart

Jesus cautions against using “empty words” or trying to manipulate God through repetition. We can’t impress God with our words; we simply need to pray authentically.

The Model Prayer

The Lord’s Prayer gives us a framework:

  • “Our Father in heaven” – We’re reminded this is a family relationship, not a business transaction.
  • “May your name be kept holy” – Worship should be a regular part of our prayer life.
  • “May your will be done” – This is perhaps the hardest part – aligning our will with God’s will. Jesus modeled this in Gethsemane when He prayed, “Not my will, but yours be done.”
  • “Give us today our daily bread” – It’s perfectly acceptable to ask God for what we need.
  • “Forgive us as we forgive others” – Our willingness to forgive others correlates with our expectation of receiving forgiveness.
  • “Deliver us from evil” – We need divine protection from a real enemy who seeks to destroy us.
What Happens When We Pray

We Get an Audience With the Creator

Hebrews 4:16 tells us we can “come boldly to the throne of our gracious God.” Think about that – most people will never get a meeting with their nation’s leader, yet we can bypass every earthly authority and go straight to the King of Kings. And He not only welcomes us; He invites us by name.

We Receive Divine Peace

Philippians 4:6-7 promises that when we pray with thanksgiving, God’s peace – which transcends understanding – will guard our hearts and minds. Remarkably, neuroscientists discovered in 2015 that anxiety and gratitude cannot coexist in the brain simultaneously. God revealed this truth through Paul nearly 2,000 years earlier. When we feed gratitude through prayer, we starve anxiety.

We Witness the Supernatural

James 5:17-18 reminds us that Elijah was “a human being, even as we are,” yet his prayers caused rain to stop for three and a half years and then return. Acts 12 records how the church’s prayers for Peter resulted in an angel freeing him from prison.

God still moves supernaturally today, though often in ways we don’t expect. He frequently answers our prayers through other people, through circumstances, through provision that arrives at just the right moment. These answers are no less miraculous than dramatic biblical events – we just need eyes to see them.

The Practice Makes Perfect

The only way to learn how to pray is to pray. Here are some practical starting points:

  • Morning and Evening Prayers: When you wake up, before opening your eyes, thank God for the new day. Before bed, express gratitude for His faithfulness.
  • Set Prayer Alarms: The early church prayed three times daily. Set phone alarms as prayer reminders – 9 AM, 3 PM, 9 PM. When the alarm sounds, pause and pray, even briefly.
  • Consistency Over Duration: Regular, short prayers throughout the day can be more transformative than occasional long prayers.

Imagine what could happen if we committed to intentional prayer for just seven days. What might change in our hearts? What could God accomplish through a community that prays together consistently?

Prayer isn’t complicated. It’s simply talking to a loving Father who wants to hear from us. The invitation stands open. The throne room awaits. All we need to do is accept the invitation and start the conversation.

LIVE IT OUT

Start your day with prayer. Before you get out of bed, thank God for a new day and pray for yourself, your family, or someone He brings to mind.

Pray with gratitude when anxiety rises. When you feel worried, pause and present your request to God with thanksgiving, trusting His peace to guard your heart and mind.

Set a prayer reminder. Choose a time each day this week to stop and pray, even if it is just for a few moments.

FAMILY CONVERSATION

Preschool Question:
Who can we talk to anytime, anywhere?

Elementary Question:
What are some things you can thank God for when you pray?

Teen Question:
Why do you think Jesus taught us to pray, “Not my will, but Your will be done”?

Encouragement for Parents:
Prayer does not have to be long or complicated to be meaningful. Let your kids see you pray simply, honestly, and regularly.

Family Challenge:
As a family, choose one time each day this week to pray together – morning, bedtime, or before a meal – and thank God for one thing before asking Him for anything.

THIS WEEK'S PRAYER

Father, thank You for inviting us to come to You in prayer. Help us remember that prayer is not a performance, but a relationship with You. Teach us to pray with gratitude, trust, and surrender. Align our hearts with Your will, give us Your peace, and help us become faithful in prayer this week. In Jesus’ name, amen.
